Hello City of Poughkeepsie, my name is Ernest Henry. I am a newcomer to the political arena, but an old soul in the philosophy that we are all here to help each other. I am a life-long Democrat, a business owner, a homeowner, and if you happen to live in the first ward, your neighbor. I am running for Common Council of the first ward because I believe in this community and the people who live in it.
My educational background includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Management and a Master’s Degree in Professional Studies. I have been building and managing businesses and organizations for over 25 years, held the position of Adjunct Professor at Marist College where I taught Corrections to students pursuing careers as lawyers, police and corrections officers. I received the 2023 Northern Dutchess NAACP “Man of Distinction” Award for my community activism, and was issued a Proclamation from Poughkeepsie’s Mayor Rob Rollison for leading a community effort to restore Malcolm X Park, as well as being recognized on the New York State Assembly floor for my community activism as a 10-year Radio Host on “Voices Beyond The Wall,” which broadcasts from Vassar College. Just recently, I promoted a “Young Lives Matter” event for the youth of Poughkeepsie, connecting them to employment, educational and therapeutic programs in an effort to direct our youth toward a successful path in life.
I plan to focus on six (6) primary issues:
• Building Community.
• Bringing businesses back to the first ward.
• Creating more activities for the youth.
• Address the nature of building code violations.
• Combat food insecurity.
• Create new avenues to address crime.
